The Best Mobile Games You Can Play on Android and iOS [2024]

The Best Mobile Games You Can Play on Android and iOS [2024]

by Andrea Knezovic

There are hundreds of thousands of games in the app stores which makes compiling a list of the best mobile games tricky, to say the least. But it’s worth a try.

What I consider the best mobile games are games that are well-designed, fun to play, stand out in their genre, and are still worth playing today, regardless of when they were released.

I’ve included mostly free mobile games on this list, but there are a few paid phone games that might be worth the money for some players. To make sure there’s something for everybody, I’ve listed the best mobile games from different genres – from mid-core games to casual games.

One more thing – the photos in this article are gameplay screenshots. That way, you’ll get a better idea of how a game looks, as promo images are usually misleading.

Without further ado, these are my picks for the best mobile games you can play on Android or iOS right now.

Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is without a doubt one of the best mobile games out there, perhaps even the best one – and I don’t say this lightly.

It’s a rich and complex open-world RPG that has everything – great storylines, hundreds of unique characters, interesting game mechanics, elemental combat system, and co-op mode.

Plus, it looks stunning – it’s one of the most visually appealing games that I’ve played.

What’s unique about it is that Genshin Impact on mobile is the same as the PC and console versions and you can actually switch between them.

So what you get on PC is what you get on mobile – it’s the same game, which is not the case for most other mobile games. Usually, you get a simplified and altered version of a PC game.

Is Genshin Impact Pay-to-Win?

Many people dismissed Genshin Impact when it first came out, thinking it was just a pay-to-win gacha game. But that’s actually not true.

Hear me out.

Yes, Genshin Impact is a gacha game and many players are not into that. That’s okay. But, Genshin Impact is not a pay-to-win game. You can play it indefinitely without spending a dime, and you won’t hit a paywall.

art style cod

Call of Duty: Mobile

Call of Duty: Mobile really takes things up a notch for fans of action-packed games. If you’re into the franchise or fast-paced shooters in general, this game doesn’t disappoint.

It offers a rich experience that’s pretty impressive for a mobile game. You get to jump into familiar maps, which feels like a walk down memory lane if you’ve played other Call of Duty titles, but with the convenience of playing on your phone.

If you’re looking for good phone games to play with friends, this is the one. But you can also play alone – there’s a variety of different modes.

The graphics are top-notch, and the controls are surprisingly smooth for a mobile game. The developers did a great job of bringing the Call of Duty essence to a smaller screen without losing the intensity and excitement the series is known for.

That’s what makes it one of the best mobile games to play right now.

The presence of in-app purchases can be a drawback for those who prefer not to spend money, though you can still enjoy the game without making purchases, as they’re about cosmetic items.

monument valley best mobile games

Monument Valley

Looking for a mobile game that’s unique, calming, and beautiful to look at?

Try Monument Valley!

This game takes you on a journey through stunning puzzle levels with a serene atmosphere. The visuals are breathtaking, with a unique blend of colors and geometric shapes that transform as you interact with them.

It’s like stepping into a living, breathing M.C. Escher painting.

The gameplay in Monument Valley is intuitive yet challenging. Each level introduces new mechanics and ways of thinking that keep you engaged without ever feeling frustrated.

The puzzles cleverly play with perspective, making you twist and turn your way through beautiful architectural mazes to guide the silent protagonist, Ida, through her quest.

This was one of the first mobile games I’ve paid for, and I didn’t regret it.

If there’s one point where opinions might diverge, it’s the game’s length, especially because this is a paid game. Some players might find Monument Valley a bit short.

among us best mobile games

Among Us

If you haven’t given Among Us a try yet, you’re missing out on some serious fun. This game is all about deception and teamwork, set in space where you play as crewmates trying to keep your spaceship running.

The twist?

There’s an imposter among you, sabotaging your efforts and picking off crew members one by one. The thrill of figuring out who the imposter is, or if you’re the imposter, deceiving your friends, is what makes this game an absolute blast.

The graphics are simple but charming, which makes it accessible to just about anyone, and the controls are straightforward.

What really makes Among Us stand out in this list of best mobile games is the social interaction. You’ll find yourself arguing, pleading, and using your best detective skills during discussions on who the imposter might be. It’s the perfect mobile game for playing with friends or jumping into games with new people.

The game can get incredibly tense but in a good way, leading to lots of laughter and memorable moments.

Just a heads up, though – it might test your trust in your friends!

temple run analysis

Temple Run 2

A list of best mobile games wouldn’t be complete without this classic.

In Temple Run 2, you’re sprinting down ancient temple ruins, dodging obstacles, and leaping over gaps, all while a giant monkey is on your tail.

Sounds fun, right? It is.

The game takes what made the original Temple Run addictive and dials it up with better graphics, smoother controls, and more varied environments. You’re not just running in a straight line; you’re zipping down zip lines, navigating mine tracks, and more.

The thrill of beating your or other people’s high score, coupled with the urge to unlock new characters and power-ups, keeps the game fresh and engaging.

It’s easy to pick up but challenging to master, which is the sweet spot for any mobile game. Whether you’ve got a couple of minutes to spare or you’re settling in for a longer session, Temple Run 2 fits the bill perfectly.

It’s casual, it’s intense, and it’ll have you saying “just one more try” more times than you’d care to admit. Definitely a must-try if you’re on the hunt for one of the best mobile games out there.

slay the spire best mobile games

Slay the Spire

Let’s jump into Slay the Spire. It’s a paid mobile game, but it stands out as one of the best mobile games for strategy and roguelike fans.

This mobile game is a deck-building adventure where every choice can lead you to victory or doom. You start with a basic deck, climbing your way up the spire, facing off against bizarre creatures, and choosing cards to add to your deck after each battle.

What makes Slay the Spire so good is its blend of strategy and unpredictability.

No two runs are the same, thanks to the vast array of cards and relics that drastically change your play style.

Do you go for a high-risk, high-reward build, or something more balanced? The choice is yours, and discovering synergies between cards is half the fun.

plants vs zombies

Plants Vs Zombies

If you’re on the hunt for one of the best mobile games that perfectly blends strategy with a pinch of humor, Plants vs. Zombies should be right up your alley.

Imagine your garden being the last line of defense against a quirky bunch of zombies.

Sounds crazy, right? But it’s crazy fun.

One of the best features of Plants vs. Zombies is its variety of plants and zombies. Each plant offers a unique way to combat the steadily advancing zombie horde, from peashooters to cherry bombs.

And the zombies? Well, they come in all shapes and sizes, each with their own special way to challenge your garden’s defenses.

The game excels in its balance of challenge and accessibility, making it easy to pick up but tough to master.

Addictive gameplay? Check. Humorous tone? Double-check.

There’s also the satisfaction of building and optimizing your strategy to beat back the zombies and protect yourself.

The Battle of Polytopia

Polytopia is a delightful twist on the classic turn-based strategy genre. It’s one of the best mobile games for those who love to plan and strategize.

It’s a minimalist world where your goal is to build your empire, explore new lands, and, of course, conquer your enemies. With its sleek, simple graphics and intuitive gameplay, Polytopia hooks you from the start.

What sets Polytopia apart is its balance between accessibility and depth.

You can pick it up quickly thanks to its straightforward mechanics, but you’ll soon discover layers of strategy as you play. Whether you’re more about expanding your territory peacefully or going full-on warrior mode, there’s a tribe and playstyle for everyone.

Multiplayer mode is where Polytopia truly shines. Battling against friends or online opponents adds an extra layer of challenge and fun.

archero gameplay

Archero

With Archero, you’re signing up for an adventure where every arrow shot counts!

You play as a lone archer and navigate through levels filled with monsters that have nothing better to do than end your quest early. The fun kicks off from the first swipe – it’s simple to learn but keeps you on your toes with its progressively challenging gameplay.

What sets Archero apart?

Its rogue-like elements mixed with bullet hell chaos.

Each level you conquer spices things up with new abilities to choose from. Do you grab that extra life, boost your attack speed, or go for the ricochet effect? These choices can make or break your run, which makes every attempt feel fresh and exciting.

Let’s not forget the gear upgrades and character progression that add a satisfying depth to your journey.

Plus, the developers are pretty generous with updates, adding new chapters and equipment regularly, so the challenge never gets stale.

runescape gameplay

RuneScape

If you’ve ever craved an adventure that feels like it has no boundaries, where you can become whoever you want to be and do whatever you want to do, RuneScape is the mobile game for you.

It’s a vast medieval fantasy MMORPG that’s teeming with life, quests, and mysteries at every turn. From battling dragons and crafting potent potions to trading in markets and forging alliances with other players, RuneScape offers an experience that’s as rich and varied as it gets.

What sets RuneScape apart among the best mobile games?

Its incredible freedom and depth. Whether you’re in the mood for intense PvP battles, intricate quests, or simply want to fish by a serene river and cook your catch, this game has it all.

This endless runner transcends the conventional boundaries of the genre and offers a blend of simplicity and depth that’s rare to find. You can glide across majestic dunes, leap over vast chasms, and grind on picturesque vines.

Alto’s Odyssey distinguishes itself with a zen-like gameplay that’s both meditative and thrilling.

The game’s core mechanics are straightforward – jump and flip through the air – yet mastering these can lead to a profoundly satisfying flow. The more you play, the more you unlock, from new characters to hidden areas – each adds layers to the game’s endless appeal.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened

You’re the new kid at Hogwarts, years after Harry’s epic “I beat Voldemort” tour. But you’re not just any student; you’re the one who’s about to shake things up with a deck of spells that would make even Hermione raise an eyebrow.

The game’s got everything: spell-slinging action that’ll test your strategic chops, an immersive Hogwarts experience, and a chance to mingle with fellow witches and wizards in a world where your biggest worry is accidentally turning your mate into a ferret.

The game also looks great – it’s got that illustrative storybook art style.

garena free fire

Free Fire

Alright, let me break it down for you why Free Fire should be your go-to phone game, especially if you’re into battle royale games.

You’re thrown onto an island with 49 other players – it’s like a surprise party, but instead of cake, you get guns. And who doesn’t love a good adrenaline rush?

Free Fire’s matches are fast. We’re talking about 10-minute games here. You can literally play during your coffee break and still have time to sip that latte. It’s perfect for living out your action-packed fantasies without a huge time commitment.

The customization is through the roof!

Want to look like a beach bum with a sniper rifle? Done. A suave secret agent with a penchant for explosives? You got it. The variety keeps things fresh and adds a personal touch to your gameplay.

Lastly, the game’s community is massive and super active. You’ll never feel lonely, and there’s always someone ready to team up or challenge you.

That’s why Free Fire stands tall among the best mobile games. It’s fast, fun, and fiercely competitive.

wild rift monetization

League of Legends: Wild Rift

If you’re into MOBA games, look no further than League of Legends: Wild Rift. It’s packing all the punch of its PC big brother into a sleek, on-the-go package. Here’s why it belongs on the list of best mobile games out there.

Firstly, it’s League of Legends, but in your pocket. You get all the strategy, the skill shots, the last-minute saves, but you can play it while pretending to listen in on Zoom meetings. The controls are so smooth, you’ll swear you’re playing on PC.

The matches are the perfect length. Got 15-20 minutes? Perfect for a quick game where you can unleash your inner champion and dominate the Rift.

A big part of LoL is, of course, the champions. Their abilities and skins make them unique, and with more than 140 of them, you can find the one that fits your playing style.

ar pokemon go

Pokemon GO

This list of best mobile games wouldn’t be complete without Pokémon GO. This game somehow convinced millions to get off their couches and explore the world, one PokéStop at a time.

Pokémon GO is like your childhood dream come to life.

Remember when you wished Pokémon were real and you could catch ’em all? Well, Niantic said, “Wish granted.”

Now, you’re out there, phone in hand, turning your mundane trip to the grocery store into an epic quest for a Snorlax blocking the cereal aisle.

This game is social without needing to actually talk to people (perfect, right?). You’ll find yourself nodding to strangers at the park, both of you knowing you’ve just battled for the same Gym.

Pokémon GO makes walking fun. Yes, you heard that right. Who knew that hatching eggs would be the motivation we all needed to hit our 10,000 steps a day?

rise of kingdoms

Rise of Kingdoms

In Rise of Kingdoms, an epic strategy game, you’re in charge of your very own civilization.

Sounds cool, right?

You’re building stuff, researching, and expanding faster than you can say “Alexander the Great.”

But here’s where it gets tricky: you’re not alone.

There are millions of other would-be conquerors out there, all eyeing your turf like it’s the last slice of pizza. It’s a massive multiplayer mash-up where you can forge alliances, take down others, defend your honor, and share in the glory.

What sets Rise of Kingdoms apart?

The real-time battles. It’s all happening live. Plus, there’s a huge map filled with secrets and surprises.

raid shadow legends characters

Raid: Shadow Legends

Imagine a world so rich in lore that Tolkien would nod in approval, filled with hundreds of unique champions. Welcome to Teleria, a stunning fantasy realm where you’ll forget you’re playing on a phone and not a high-end console.

Here’s what makes it one of the best mobile games for Android and iOS.

In this mobile game, you’re the chosen one, tasked with assembling a squad of heroes. I’m talking elves, orcs, undead, and more, each with their own set of skills. And you get to mix and match these bad boys in a fantasy draft more exhilarating than fantasy football.

Now, the battles are where it’s at.

They’re turn-based, which means you’ve got the time to strategize. Every decision counts, which makes victory that much sweeter.

But wait, there’s more!

Dungeons, PvP arenas, clan bosses that require teamwork – it’s all here. And with new content dropped regularly, boredom is unlikely.

Royal Match

The last game on this list of best mobile games is Royal Match.

Now, this game is a bit different from most other games on this list. It’s a simple match-3 puzzle game. There’s no intense action or strategizing, this mobile game is more for relaxing and killing time.

Essentially, each level is a brain teaser, and you mix and match your way through tiles to unlock rewards and decorate various rooms. You’re basically the royal interior designer, choosing wallpapers and furniture like you’re on one of those home makeover shows.

Despite this being a simple casual game, it’s very addictive and you’ll find yourself playing it over and over again.
